Now Rat’s Adorable

We saw Ratatouille the other day and had a great time. Wonderful to look at, great graphics and a good story. The humor is funny without being mean, and the rats are really well done. The way they move is just like you’d expect rats to scurry about. They are truly revolting, not by being gross, but by playing on our reflexive fear of rats in the kitchen. Go see it! Another aspect of the story I really like is that it doesn’t have an outright happy end… they lose the restaurant and while they seem to be pretty happy in their new digs, it’s probably not quite what they set out to do. Also, the villains in this movie are of a realistic, small scope. Most villains in real life aren’t out to destroy the world: they are petty, small, turf warriors that do small things like hold one’s purse upside down at airport security or sell inferior frozen food under the gourmet brand. Pixar tells this story very well.
